A pharmaceutical firm believes that a glaucoma medication which is being developed for cosmetic use may have potential as a cure for hair loss. Latisse is already being touted as a tool to give people extra-long eye-lashes and now internet rumours are spreading that tests are taking place to see if it could also grow hair on the scalp.

The drug is made by the firm Allergan and was originally marketed as an eye-drop to bring relief to sufferers of glaucoma. However doctors started to notice patients were reporting their eyelashes were becoming longer and fuller. Patients apply it like an eyeliner and apparently the Hollywood star Brooke Shields is a big fan.

Last year the FDA approved it for cosmetic use, though it is only available with a doctor’s prescription.  Since Latisse, medical name Bimatoprost, hit the market in May, it has totalled about $12 m worth of sales. If it does work as a hair loss treatment, then Allergan stand to make considerably more from the drug.

At the moment, there are only two medications that doctors widely accept work as hair loss treatments. The first, Propecia, is a prescription drug that treats male-pattern hair loss. The manufacturers say that Propecia can stop hair loss within six months, as well as promote new hair growth.

Then there is Regaine, or Rogaine as it is known in the U.S. The topical gel contains the active ingredient minoxodil and unlike Propecia also has a version aimed at women suffering from hair loss.

Both Propecia and Regaine are big sellers in the pharmaceutical market so companies are eager to develop new treatments, as the competition is so limited the profits could be large.

Speaking to Allergan investors, Scott Whitcup, who is in charge of Research and Development at the firm, said “We’re in the midst of looking at a number of [selections] by Bimatoprost for hair growth on the scalp.”

However he warned that trials could take some time. “Unlike Lumigan for glaucoma, we don’t have the eight years plus of clinical trials data so we’re sort of starting from scratch.”

As the companies intent to investigate the potential of the drug further was announce, rumours started to abound that the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline were considering acquiring Allergan. Market pundits have generally agreed that if there really is potential for Bimatoprost as a hair loss treatment, then the firm could prove an extremely profitable purchase.
